Fishing in Wichita - J.P. Weigand & Sons, Inc.

June 18 is National Go Fishing Day, and June is a truly beautiful month to be out on the water in Kansas. Here in the Wichita area, we're lucky to have a wealth of great fishing options close by, including over 20 public lakes within the metro area.

Our real estate agents are excited to share some of their favorite local fishing holes for bass, catfish, panfish, and more. Be sure to mark your calendars for June 18, and join us at one of these outstanding Wichita fishing lakes!

  • Cruiser Lake - 1700-2398 E. 29th St. N, Wichita, KS 67219
Often referred to as K-96 Lake because of its location just off the K-96 Exit along I-135, Cruiser Lake is one of the larger public fishing lakes in Wichita at 46 acres. The lake supports healthy populations of crappie, sunfish, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Located within minutes of countless Wichita homes for sale, Cruiser Lake is open to non-powered boats, and almost the entire shoreline is accessible for shore fishing. There is also an ADA-accessible fishing pier and boardwalk.

  • KDOT Lakes - 901 E. 45th St. N, Park City, KS 67219
The two lakes collectively known as the KDOT (Kansas Department of Transportation) Lakes are situated on either side of I-135 in northern Wichita. Both offer some great urban fishing opportunities for sunfish and bass and are stocked with catchable channel catfish from May to September. Small hand-powered craft like kayaks and float tubes are allowed, but motorboats are not. West KDOT Lake is the larger of the two at 15 acres, but 10-acre East KDOT Lake is also stocked with rainbow trout in springtime, providing a unique fishing opportunity.

  • Chisholm North Lake - Woodlawn Blvd. Ste 106, Wichita, KS 67220
Located within Chisholm Creek Park North, the 25-acre lake known as either Chisholm North Lake or North Pond offers solid populations of largemouth bass and white crappie and is stocked monthly with channel catfish. The lake also operates as a put-and-take trout fishery from November to April, but few trout remain in the lake by summer. Chisholm North Lake is open to small non-powered boats, and there is a popular jogging trail around the shore that offers ample bank fishing access.

  • Sedgewick County Park Lakes - 6501 W. 21st St., Wichita, KS 67205
One of the largest parks in the Wichita Metro Area, Sedgewick County Park is a great local destination not only for fishing but also for hiking, jogging, family picnics, and barbecues. The park has five small fishing lakes that offer 63 total acres of water. Largemouth bass are the most sought-after game fish in the lakes, but anglers commonly catch bluegill and catfish too, along with occasional crappie and white bass. Several lakes have fishing docks, and all have easy bank access.

  • Wichita South Lake - 1524 W. 55th St. S, Wichita, KS 67217
Spanning 17 acres within South Lakes Park, Wichita South Lake offers some of the best bluegill fishing within the city limits. There are also some largemouth bass in the lake, though they tend to be small, and anglers catch occasional catfish, crappie, and sauger as well. Wichita South Lake is a former sandpit lake; the water is crystal clear, and vegetation is minimal. Kayaks and float tubes are allowed.
