Exploration Place - Wichita, KS - J.P. Weigand & Sons, Inc.

Whether you're visiting the area or call it home, Exploration Place in Wichita is a wonderful place to spend the afternoon. Kids will love it, and they'll actually be learning about a variety of topics while they're having fun.

Our real estate agents share what you need to know before heading out to Exploration Place.

  • Permanent Exhibits
The museum has some activities that are scheduled to last only for a specific range of time, but these are some of the permanent exhibits that are always available to check out:
    • Exploration Park - Take a walk on paths along the Arkansas River, take a break in the shady picnic grove, or let the kids get some exercise on the play structures.
    • Design Build Fly - Learn how planes are created in Wichita aircraft plants.
    • Sun, Earth, Universe - Build a model spacecraft and learn about NASA's current science research.
    • Explore Kansas - Discover elements of the state's land, water, and weather along with the life they support.

  • Live Science Show
These specially scheduled shows are interactive, educational, and, most of all, fun!
    • On a Roll - This show is designed for younger kids and features all kinds of things they love, like balloons and bubbles.
    • Project Hoverboard - Take a look at quantum locking, the cool technology that will one day let you hover like you've seen in Back to the Future.
    • Orbit Academy - Watch demonstrations of some elements that affect citizen space travel, such as the hard vacuum of space and high-speed impacts.

  • Digital Dome Theater and Planetarium
The largest dome theater in Kansas has a huge screen, surround sound, and a 360-degree view. Shows in the theater are ticketed separately and aren't included in the main admission charge, and you don't need to pay for admission to the exhibits if you're just seeing a theater show.

Shows include one on the extremes of Northern Australia's environment and animals and one that follows a green sea turtle's life from hatchling to adulthood.

  • Special Events
Exploration Place hosts frequent events, including many directly connected to holidays. Visit the museum on Thursdays to sample food from some of the area's best food trucks and enjoy live music, or have fun at a Halloween-themed Boo'reakfast event — complete with treats, games, activities, and character appearances — and much more. Most of these special events are ticketed separately, but admission to the food trucks and live music featured on Food Truck Thursdays are free.

  • What to Know Before You Go
    • How to get there - Exploration Place is located at 300 N. McLean Blvd. in downtown Wichita along the Arkansas River. Major streets will lead you to the museum's main entrance, and parking is free. City bus routes also run by the museum.
    • Ticket prices - You can buy tickets for exhibits, special features in the dome, and featured films in the dome, depending on what you'd like to see. Or buy an all-access pass that covers everything. If you find that you're a frequent visitor to the museum, consider buying a membership, which gives you free admission to the exhibits and reduced admission to other features.
    • Hours - The museum is open seven days a week. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday-Sunday and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Thursdays.
