Bel Aire is proud that it was ranked as the #3 Safest Town in Kansas by Safewise. Bel Aire’s City Hall building—built in 2004—is located on East Central Park Avenue. City Hall is the first section of a wider vision that includes a town center, residential housing and a government complex. City Hall is also home to many city departments and serves as the primary point of contact between citizens and city staff. Bel Aire is one of the newest cities in Kansas. Formed as an Improvement District of Sedgwick County in 1955, Bel Aire began as a collection of subdivisions. The Pearson and Arthur Heights Additions were the first incorporated into the improvement district followed by Bel Aire Village and Bel Aire Heights in the 1970’s. Growth of Bel Aire has always been driven by a sense of community and independence.
Bel Aire was incorporated as a city on November 26, 1980 following a Kansas Supreme Court decision. The seal of the city exemplifies the sense of community, stating the city was, “Established by the Will of Its Citizens.” Growth through Bel Aire’s early stages remained constant as additional residential housing and businesses located to the city. Bel Aire added nearly 100 homes per year through the 1990’s, moving from a starting population of 100 in 1955 to over 6,700 current residents.
Expansion continues today as new residential homes and businesses continue to locate here. Despite the high number of new residents moving to the city, a strong sense of community and common purpose still resonates within Bel Aire. Bel Aire Recreation Center offers a wide range of programs for all ages, including youth sports leagues, exercise and gym facilities and a broad range of group activities and classes. Bel Aire boasts two active Senior organizations that cater to community members over age 55. The city maintains five public parks on which include two lakes and several playgrounds.
