Darrin Hackney is a local professional photographer who was born and raised in Newton, Kansas. Darrin is an Emporia State University alumni who relocated to Wichita in 1990. Darrin switched his Computer Science major to Restaurant Management with no regrets. Darrin is actually one of the mastermind behind the famous Mort’s Martini Bar menu!
When I asked Darrin what made him pursue a career in professional photography, he quickly replied “I just wanted better pictures of my dogs!” Though I feel there is much truth in that statement, I believe what really got Darrin into photography are the people and places he gets to meet and discover through his work. Darrin most certainly has an eye for that perfect shot. He also seems much braver than most to venture through dark allies and parking garages to discover and expose the “nooks and crannies” of our great city!
What an adventure I had in the short 45 minutes I spend with Darrin! We started at Mead’s Corner with coffee and our appointment quickly moved to the streets of Downtown Wichita, where Darrin seemed right at home! We walked, snapped selfies with the statues, and I listened as Darrin spilled fascinating secrets of the city (There is actually a cast iron column in front of the Intrust Bank parking garage that is the remains of the Allen & Tucker East-West grocery store dated 1874 – who knew!).
Darrin photographs weddings, engagements, children, families, professional headshots, and pretty much anything that catches his artist eye. His love for life, fun and his unique creativity is captured in each image!
